RE: Extended tire spacing chocks
I've got the same problem and havent' found a commercial option yet. I've been working on the homemade ones but having problems with that because of the bar that goes up between the tires to the bottom of the TT.
I've settled so far with the little plastic chocks and just making sure we drive up onto them and slip the second one behind it and settling down into it. Since we started doing that little drive up onto the front one, we have had minimal if any motion. And no-one has stolen our chocks again :S

RE: Planning a trip and need some advice
don't know if it's changed in the last couple of years.. but if you buy an Amtrack ticket from Eugene to Vancouver BC.... from Seattle to Vancouver Bc it's by bus, not train. Was a bit of a shock to get on a what i thought was going to be a train at a train station and it turned out to be a bus.
Sounds like a great trip though!

Will do... have some quiet time in the morning before we hit the zoo with the kids so will open them up and show all :) will try to get it on before we head out but won't forget :) They aren't the prettiest but they are very functional and are standing up well.

i converted 2/3 of my shirt closets with shelving. I didn't want to screw into the walls of the trailer or closet so what I did is make shelves that got progressively deeper as they got lower and then made corresponding bracket boards that slip into the closet and then the shelves sit on top of the brackets which hold the boards out against the walls of the closet. I'll get pictures later as its 630am and my family is still asleep...lol.
I used some 1/4" shelves for both the outer boards and the shelves. i then screwed 1X2 boards the same length as the depth of the shelf itself. The reason I made teh shelves varily depths is so that we could use the entire depth of the closet plus things wouldn't fall off the 'back' of the shelf. the bottom shelf I Cut a little less deep but pushed it right to the back of teh closet which opened up the 4" hole (guess normally a drawer goes there). What I like about it is that if/when we sell this unit, the shelves all come out without and damage to the walls.
It's working great! Although I dont' think I explained it very good.

We only have one vehicle.. our truck. We considered getting a little car for the 40 weeks a year we aren't towing trailer.. but the savings in fuel just didn't add up when I factored in just the extra insurance and the fact that with two vehicles in the garage that we would be a lot less aware and cautious about saving fuel and saving the 'just to the corner store' trips would increase substantially. Never mind if we bought something that was cheap, we would more than likely have higher maintenance costs or a payment.. So we stick with our pretty truck that we do actually use the 4X4 feature on occasionally :)

To the OP.. you asked what you get for $60 a month... for us it is a spot in an open parking lot at work which does have a locked gate so no vehicles can get in however anyone can walk in. There is no security other than the gate and even that is often open during business hours. We have no water or electricity and no coverage or shade. However, it is around the corner from our stick house which for us makes up for the shortfalls.
For your specific situation, I think if it was me, I would suggest what you think is fair and tell her if its not ok with her, that is just fine, even if it's not. Having your trailer only a mile from home is definately worth something... however if you are already considering switching your rv, then you have a built in solution there already.
Since we are only hearing your side, you just never know if there is something else going on with her or in her life that is causing her to react like this.
My sister just bought a house with 5 acres here... pretty sure they bought one that didn't have any place i could park my trailer ;)

RE: RV resorts/camping in BC...best times??
If you are going through on highway 3, I suggest staying at Kettle River RV PArk.. We floated the river 4 times in 5 days earlier this summer and had a great time. Saw a fair number of teens on the river too. I really enjoy the Kootenany's myself but then I live in the Okanagan and get to play here whenever Im not camping :)
For amusement parks, there is CAlaway Park outside of Calgary, PNE already mentioned and Silver wood.. we are going to Calaway next Wednesday :)

I'm curious as to how many fins over the plastic piece should be..I was told the further to the left the colder. I normally have it on the second fin about 2/3 of the way up and that was keeping it right around 35-36 degrees. however last weekend the average outside temp was almost 100 and I had a bleep of a time keeping it below 40. I moved it over one fin and down a bit but didn't see much difference. I wouldn't say it was stuffed either.
I love reading these threads as I learn so much.

So, is it a good idea to unplug from power and water if you don't have surge protection? Our local RV dealer doesn't have surge protection in stock I discovered on the way to our campsite last week so when a T storm blew through I unplugged the power but left the water. The water is pumped up so when we lost power shortly into the storm we lost water anyway. Was this the correct procedure? I did that After I rolled the awning and stowed everything I could under the trailer...
Lesson I did learn however... carry some water in the fresh water tank! I wasn't thinking about losing direct water when the power went out. Luckily we had a little left from the drive over but a lot of campers in the park didn't have any water on board which made for toilet flushing difficulties. I also want another of those vent covers as it was extrememly humid in there with 2 four year olds and 4 adults and a rain storm.

Totally agree on this topic.. I've never cooked on gas other than the little colmen (sp) camp stove.. but camping in our new trailer on its gas stove with oven is like a dream come true!
I store my baking sheets in the oven... and got a cheap one that I have to manually light the pilot...lol

I may not get to be fully solo... but more often than not, I am solo from when I leave the house to up to 24 hours at the campsite with 4 year old twin boys. We plan our trips where my DH can drop his Super B trailers and bobtail in his rig over to the campground. If I waited for him to get home, I would never get to go camping.
Things I do which make driving solo and setting up easier? Back up camera for the truck for hitching... turns a 10-15 minute ordeal into a 30 second with one GOAL instead of 1500.... I have bins in the trailer and bed of truck for specific things like a sewer bin, fresh water bin, toy bin (for kids ;)) and a set of walkie talkies. When I get to a site, I walk to the site and figure out the approach, and if there is anyone around who can assist me with backing up for spotting, I ask. I don't have a problem with backups, just like having the extra eyes in case something jumps out.
go slow and easy and I agree with keeping the pups at home for at least the first trip out. Great company, but still distractions. good luck and enjoy!

Don't know anything about them... however when we were looking for trailers and had it down to two with pretty much the same.. we chose the one that had the outdoor stove instead of grill... mostly for the reasons you state.. well not mostely, mostly because I prefer cooking with charcoal :)

maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn't sound like the OP wants to tow his trailer with the Explorer.. just help level it out.
We have used the trolley jack that we keep in the truck on occasion to lift the axle up to slip another board in. Just remember to lift the scissor jacks on the far side :)

I used to do the backup and look method myself... until I installed a backup camera for other purposes (can't see cars behind my truck when I'm parking in a stall and want to get my nose off the road.)
I never even though about hitching up and yesterday was my first time with it... it went so smoothly! I do have to agree that its hard to see the black on black to know when to stop and I haven't managed to get my camera to be without snow fully so when those two things are corrected its going to be totally sweet!

We just use one of the ones from the kids stick house beds... it just slips under the mattress and their weight keeps it in place. Some people screw theirs down to either an extra sheet of plywood or the plywood of the bunk.

Something that I don't think anyone has mentioned is this; front to back level is much more critical than side to side. Front to back needs to be 3 degrees or less, side to side can be up to 6 degrees out.

heading over to the south west Kootenany's for 3 maybe 4 nights.. and then on the 15th leaving for a 12 night tour of Southern AB and BC with highlights at Calaway Park, Fort Steel and Kokanee Creek PP. Then after only 4 nights home we are off to Vancouver for Symphony of fire :)
